In the previous episodes: following a workshop with Augustas Serapinas and a concert with the Vilnius University Folk Ensemble "Ratilio", for the Third Episode FOROF presents Dopo il diluvio, a performance by the theater company Muta Imago designed in dialogue with the site specific and FOROF archaeological spaces. Dopo il diluvio is an augural ceremony set in the underground floor of the Basilica Ulpia, where past rituals, present urgencies and future predictions converge. Through the harmonization of voices, sounds, lights and gestures unfolding with an immersive narrative and perceptual rhythm, it creates a temporal short circuit.
With this performance, the Forum of Trajan returns as the site of a renewed liturgy of the Auspices, a form of divination by which the augurs (augures), priests of ancient Rome, interpreted the will of the gods, deriving omens from observing the bird flight or other natural phenomena. As messengers par excellence of the divine will, in Dopo il diluvio the flying beings are sonic presences in a score conceived as an epistolary exchange between voices telling anecdotes and memories, in a combination of vibrations and light effects.
In the apsidal area of the Basilica Ulpia, fragments of knowledge, now-extinct harmonies from ancient wind instruments and synthetic electronic frequencies, will alternate to evoke a forgotten past and a dystopian, unpredictable, seductive future. The audience, moving freely in a seemingly ruined setting, is drawn to the flow of the score of voices and lights, which compose evocative systems within a Temple emerged from its own ruins.
The work conceived by Muta Imago puts at its core a dialogue that prompts the viewer to explore an archaeology telling a story to be heard, leading from the past to the future. The change of perspective offered by Dopo il diluvio, with its sound body hosted in a space inhabited by ruins, stories and the Mudmen of Serapinas, creates a resonant landscape where imaginative ancestral traces can be found, a reflection of the cycle of life that has been and will be.
